Read the Transcript from the Thursday, July 13th chat with Sara Seidman assistant makeup on Dawson's Creek

Sara is originally from Virginia. She was educated at the North Carolina School of the Arts as an Opera Singer. Sara was taught stage make-up by her father who had grown up on the Vaudeville stage. When Sara moved with her children to Wilmington,NC she fell into doing makeup and hair while working on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. The makeup artist Dell Armstrong (who started his career on the Wizard of OZ) asked her if she could do make-up and he hired her for the show. It snowballed from there. She worked Three years on Matlock doing hair, The Young Indiana Jones Series with George Lucas, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with the Henson Creature shop and many projects in England including the Animatronic Horse Team on the Oscar winning film Braveheart. She has been with Dawson's Creek from the beginning and does Katie Holmes' and Meredith Monroe's makeup for the show as well as Mary Beth Peil's, who plays Grams. Mary Beth is aged for the show. Sara has been in the business for over 20 years in one form or another.

MODERATOR: Welcome to the "Dawson's Creek" Live Chat Event! Tonight our very special guest is Sara Seidman, Makeup Artist for "Dawson's Creek"! I will be your host for this event, and you'll know me by my screen name, "Moderator." Sara will be chatting under the name, "Speaker_Sara."

MODERATOR: Welcome to the Dawson's Creek Live Chat Event, Sara! We're very excited to have you here with us tonight. How are you doing?

SPEAKER_Sara: Fairly well, thanks! :)

MODERATOR: Great! Our first question comes from jess1313…
jess1313: How did you start in the business?

SPEAKER_Sara: I started in the business as an opera singer...and then through many life events, I ended up a makeup artist! My father trained me in stage makeup when I was 14. He was in vaudeville.

MODERATOR: Wow! Very diverse - opera to DC! CreekAttack12 has a follow up Q…
CreekAttack12: How did you learn professional make-up?

SPEAKER_Sara: That started after my father trained me and I left singing. I started apprenticing under other makeup artists, and reading books, such as Stage Makeup by Richard Corson, and Techniques of the Professional Makeup Artist, by Vincent Kehoe. Those two books are good for the basics, and then apprenticing helped sharpen my skills.
DawsonsLockerKey: Is it better to learn makeup arts in school or through experience on shows?

SPEAKER_Sara: Both! Schools are good to get the basics, but you're still going to have to apprentice. The makeup artist who got me started in film and television was Del Armstrong. He hired me for Ninja Turtles 2.

MODERATOR: You mentioned Ninja Turtles 2, so...
eaglecable1: Have you worked on any other TV shows or movies?

SPEAKER_Sara: Yes, ten years' worth! The list of movie and TV credits is very long. You can see my resume on my Web site.

MODERATOR: For those of you interested in learning more about being a professional makeup artist, Sara has a Web site! Check out members.cox.net/saras3rd/Sara-Lea.html …but wait until after the chat ;) Cherlyn has a two parter...
Cherlyn: What brand of make up do you use for the cast, and what kind of lipstick do you use on the girls, since it always looks so natural?

SPEAKER_Sara: As far as the brands of makeup, each person has a different brand... But Katie and Meredith wear M.A.C.'s Twig. Lipstick, that is! Base makeups we use include Visiora, and Borghese. We use Maybelline eye makeup. We don't use one set brand; many of them you can buy in the stores.

MODERATOR: Here is an interesting question...
dawson_lvr_06: Who on Dawson's Creek takes the longest to put on makeup?

SPEAKER_Sara: Depends on the makeup ,but the girls usually take longer than the guys. If we're doing a dress-up makeup, it will take longer. Daytime makeup will take about 20 minutes for the girls, and evening makeup takes about 30-45 minutes, depending on how much is put on.

MODERATOR: Cool. A lot of people are asking...
ashley witter: Do the guys on the show wear just as much make-up as the girls?

SPEAKER_Sara: No, they do not. The guys take about 20 minutes to make up. I use corrective makeup, base, and powder on the guys. The corrective makeup is to make them look younger, since they're playing younger.

MODERATOR: Here is a question we all have been wondering about...
Tuffylove: Hi Sara, is it true that they age "Grams" for the show, and that she is in fact 40 years old?

SPEAKER_Sara: I don't know her actual age :) But we do some aging makeup on her. It's not heavy-duty. It gives the effect that we want, without looking made-up. We don't want to detract from her natural beauty! Basically, for Mary Beth [Grams], a light base is put on. Then another base, that's two shades darker, is applied to her natural laugh lines with a very fine eyeliner brush, and then lightly powdered, and that's it! It's very basic, and it has its roots in stage makeup.

MODERATOR: Our next question is from candy_love…
candy_love: why was Andie's makeup so weird at the prom?

SPEAKER_Sara: Well, basically Meredith [Andie] and I made a choice to make her look angelic. So we used a lot of glitter and soft colors to match her dress. It was something that she, I, and the hair stylist Julie Delaney decided to do. Meredith wanted to look different than she usually looks. We all had a good time doing it! :)
madelinele: i loved Joey's makeup at the prom, could you tell me what products you used?

SPEAKER_Sara: Check out http://www.makeup411.com/. The makeup I used is listed there, under Breakdowns. For base makeup, Visiora. Eye makeup, M.A.C. There's a photo of Katie on the site wearing that makeup, and a description of each product used... it's a little complicated to go into here…

MODERATOR: Cool! We'll have to check that out. Here is an interesting question...
NorthBeach: Have you ever played a "make-up" trick on any of the cast members? Maybe made the guys look like girls???

SPEAKER_Sara: LOL! We did it for pranks, but never for camera... but, oh yes! We have a blooper reel -- But of course, no one else sees that! :) At Halloween, I made myself up as a man, walked on set, and freaked everyone out! Josh kept saying, "That's just NOT right, that's just not right!!!!"

MODERATOR: LOL - I wish we could see that blooper reel! ;)
kaje1: Who is the funniest member of the cast?

SPEAKER_Sara: That would be a tie between Josh and Meredith. Meredith can be absolutely hysterical! Both she and Josh like to keep the crew entertained, and keep their spirits up after those long days.

MODERATOR: Since we're talking about the man of the moment, Pacey...
skyfruit: Is Joshua always that cute or he needs a lot of make up?

SPEAKER_Sara: He's always that cute! ;-)

MODERATOR: Of course!
blabby: Have any cast members looked like hell some days and you needed to spend extra time on them. Hangovers, etc. You don't need to name names :-)

SPEAKER_Sara: Sometimes if they have had very busy schedules! ;-)

MODERATOR: I am sure they do!
NEM: Who on the show is most like their character?

SPEAKER_Sara: The interesting part is that most everybody is like their characters in some respects. There's a piece of each actor in their character.

MODERATOR: Quick change of gears back to the guys...
Pacey012: Do the guys ever complain about the make-up they're wearing, like it's uncomfortable or annoying or sumthing like that?

SPEAKER_Sara: Sure! Most men don't like wearing makeup, but they do it 'cause it's part of their job! Summertime is the worst for everybody, because it's so hot and so humid. One of the things that we do as a courtesy for the actors is remove their makeup for them every night, to protect their skin.

MODERATOR: I have to ask this next question from eaglecable because it made me laugh...
eaglecable1: Does Josh actually SIT STILL for makeup??

SPEAKER_Sara: LOL! He does sit still, and then he gets out of his chair again… J First season, I had to bungee him to the chair! LOL

MODERATOR: LOL!
KellyCaryl: Did you do the makeup for the episode where the football team wears it?

SPEAKER_Sara: Oh yeah! We had to have extra help for that, too! It was funny, we had a good time, doing the dirt and the lipstick and all that on them. Those boys, they looked sweet!!! :)
JACK_SCOTLAND: R U LOOKING FORWARD TO SEASON 4 AND DO U HAVE ANY CAST INFO ?

SPEAKER_Sara: Yes, I'm definitely looking forward to Season 4!

MODERATOR: You'll just have to wait and watch! :)

SPEAKER_Sara: We're looking forward to new things, trying to get some whole new looks!

MODERATOR: SammyS has a question...
SammyS: Do you have a friendship with the cast and crew outside of work?

SPEAKER_Sara: Yes, I do. We do go out all together every once in a while... After you work with somebody all those many hours, that's what you do! It's like one big family.

MODERATOR: Very cool -- Let's get back to some makeup questions for a moment...
QaZzY: So how do the actors look before you work your magic on them? Are they much different from what we see on screen? I am sure Katie Holmes doesn't need much work? =)

SPEAKER_Sara: My job is to enhance the beauty that is already there. :) Katie doesn't need much work! She's a natural beauty.

MODERATOR: Here is a "behind-the-scenes" question…
jess1313: has anyone on the cast changed their look drastically over the summer?

SPEAKER_Sara: I don't know yet. I won't see them till we start shooting next week!

MODERATOR: Hmmm... :) we'll have to wait and see... I think this next user is referring to Keri Russell…
hiltz: Is it true that DC cast members aren't allowed to cut their hair because of that chick from Felicity?

SPEAKER_Sara: Any drastic changes that the cast makes to their appearance, they're supposed to clear it with the studio first. But that's always been in their contracts; it has nothing to do with Felicity. Any show has contract stipulations like that.
kaje1: Do you watch the show yourself? What is your favorite episode or storyline?

SPEAKER_Sara: I do watch the show. Favorite episode in first season was the Fright Night episode, the Halloween one. 'Cause we got to do blood! And it was fun, we had a lot of fun with it.

MODERATOR: All the chat users want to be on Dawson's Creek, so here is a biggie!
msharp1074: Is it hard to become an extra, Sara?

SPEAKER_Sara: There's so many people that want to be extras now, it is hard to get a spot.
cwise7: My question is what brand and name of lipstick did Joey use in the finale? And can makeup read differently on camera than on set?

SPEAKER_Sara: The lipstick Joey wore was M.A.C.'s Twig. She wears that most of the time. And yes, makeup can definitely read differently on camera... For example, Twig lipstick in real life is a beautiful brownish-red that you could wear as an evening color. But it looks like natural lip color on camera.
NorthBeach: What's your favorite part of doing make up? And what challenges would you like to encounter in the future?

SPEAKER_Sara: My favorite part of doing makeup is to take the face, and create the canvas; cover up any flaws, and enhance what's there. The face is a canvas to me. As far as challenges go -- just to keep growing as an artist. I'd like to do more special effects makeup, like Rick Baker and Dick Smith do. They are the premier special effects makeup designers in the business!

MODERATOR: Here is the first time we have ever had a special request from a chat user-- let's indulge him. :)
JACK_SCOTLAND: CAN U WISH ME HAPPY BIRTHDAY IM 18 ON SATURDAY?

SPEAKER_Sara: Sure! Happy Birthday, Jack! And I'd also like to say hello to Michelle, little Ronnie, and Ronnie! :)

MODERATOR: OK- lots of shout-outs!
ilovejen: Who is your favorite person to do makeup for?

SPEAKER_Sara: That's hard to say, cause I like all the people I work on in the show... There really hasn't been anybody I haven't enjoyed working on.
MichelleLynn: What do you do with your time when you're not doing Dawson's Creek?

SPEAKER_Sara: My children and I go and visit my future family.! ;-)

MODERATOR: We have time for 2 more questions... :)
hiltz: Is there any part of the job you hate?

SPEAKER_Sara: The long hours! That part is hard. I can work anywhere from 14 to 16 hours a day.

MODERATOR: I just want to say 2 things... 1-- we have had A LOT of great questions from the users and it was hard to get to all of them… And 2-
Ash14: Who is ur favorite couple P/J or D/J?

MODERATOR: LOL!!! Everyone has to answer that one, in every chat we have! J

SPEAKER_Sara: *Big sigh* It depends on the episode! You think I'm gonna get in the middle of THAT one??? lol You know, we don't know what the writers are going to write, until we get each script... so how can I make a choice? *sigh*

MODERATOR: Well, Sara, we're almost out of time for this chat event. Do you have any final comments you'd like to share with us?

SPEAKER_Sara: I just want to tell everybody that I'm so happy that you watch the show. Keep watching it, and if you're interested in becoming a makeup artist, check out my Web site! It will give you some ideas on how to get started... :) Good night everyone, and thanks for coming! It was great chatting with you all!
